Western Illinois women's soccer was defeated by Youngstown State 3-0 on Tuesday (Aug. 12) in the first of two exhibitions for the Leathernecks this year.

The Leathernecks fell behind 1-0 on a defensive miscue, allowing the Penguins to take the lead.

Youngstown State then scored on a corner and from the penalty spot to secure the 3-0 scoreline.

The IPFW women's soccer team kicked off the 2014 campaign on an unusually chilly and windy late-summer night as they hosted Northern Illinois for an exhibition match at Hefner Field on Tuesday.

A slow start plagued the Mastodons and the Huskies took advantage early, scoring three minutes into the game on a long goal by Northern Illinois' Sara Spaulding that sailed just over the head of IPFW goalkeeper, junior Sam Pavlika, into the back corner of the net.

The home team recovered quickly, however, as they intensified the attack in the midfield and won a majority of the possession battles for the remainder of the first half. IPFW's best chance of the opening period came with 14 minutes left as junior forward Rachel Good skimmed a shot just over the top crossbar from outside the left corner of the 18-yard box.

SDSU Hires Ellis as Assistant Golf Coach

Dean Ellis, who spent 20 years as the Northern Michigan head golf coach, has been hired

as an assistant coach for the South Dakota State golf program, head coach Casey VanDamme announced Tuesday.
 
Ellis, who was named the head golf coach at Northern Michigan in 1993, led NMU to the 2014 NCAA Regionals, where it placed 14^th, and finished eighth at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf (GLIAC) Championships. Additionally, he guided the Wildcats to the 1999 NCAA Division II Tournament.

While at Northern Michigan, Ellis served as the Golf Association of Michigan Governor, on the NCAA Division II, District IV Golf Regional Advisory Committee, and organized and administrated the 1999 and 2010 GLIAC Golf Championships.

a 1-0 win over Air Force on Sunday morning at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. 

After 30 minutes of working the preseason kinks out, junior forward Taylor Ivins (West Haven, Utah) found the breakthrough in the 31st minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Jocelyn Loomis (Sandy, Utah). Redshirt senior Shannen Johnson (Golden, Colo.) switched the point of attack to Loomis to begin the play. Loomis played a through ball in-between the outside back and center back to a running Ivins who tucked her strike inside the far post, past oncoming Falcon keeper Meghan Strang.

Denver Names Kent Assistant Men's Golf Coach

University of Denver men's golf head coach Erik Billinger has announced the hiring of

Patrick Kent as his new assistant coach.

"I'm so excited that Patrick will be joining the DU golf program," Billinger said. "He brings professionalism and a passion for teaching the game and for recruiting."

Kent joins the Pioneers after three years as a golf instructor at the Joe Thiel World Wide Golf Schools and Patrick Kent Golf in Seattle, WA.

After his graduation from Colorado Christian University in 2010, Kent spent two years playing professionally.

Omaha Adds Barrett to Women's Basketball Staff

The UNO women's basketball program and head coach Brittany Lange have announced the addition of Cory Barrett as the program's new director of basketball operations.

Barrett - formerly Cory Montgomery - was a first-team All-Big 12 performer at Nebraska in 2010, capping an illustrious four-year career with the Huskers. Barrett helped lead the Huskers to their greatest season in school history in 2010 - a 32-2 overall record, a 16-0 mark in Big 12 play and their first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. She notched 25 double-figure scoring efforts as a senior, while averaging 12.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game overall.

Former NDSU Standouts Sign to Play Professionally in Europe

Former North Dakota State standouts Taylor Braun and TrayVonn Wright have signed contracts to play professional basketball in Europe. Braun was the 2014 Summit League Player of the Year while Wright earned second team All-Summit League honors while leading the Bison the the league championship and an NCAA Round of 64 victory. Braun will play in Belgium's top league and Wright will compete in the premier Austrian league.

ORU's Jankovic to Coach With Serbian National Team

Oral Roberts University assistant women’s basketball coach Bojan Jankovic will once again

serve on the coaching staff of the Serbian national team, it was announced today. Jankovic will be an assistant coach for the Serbia team that plays in four tournaments this year, including the 2014 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

“It’s a tremendous honor to once again represent Serbia and ORU at the highest level of international basketball,” said Jankovic. “We were very successful last year, and I look forward to helping my country achieve even greater accomplishments this season.”

Jankovic was an assistant for Serbia in 2013, helping lead the country to a 4^th place finish at the 2013 FIBA European Women’s Championship. The semifinal appearance was the first in Serbia’s history, and it earned the nation a spot in the FIBA World Championship for the first time since 2002.

DU Names Cutler Assistant Women's Golf Coach

Former Princeton head coach Nicki Cutler has been named the new University of Denver women’s golf assistant coach, head coach Lindsay Kuhle announced on Monday. Cutler replaces Erik Billinger, who took the DU men’s head coaching position in June.

“I am so excited to announce that Nicki Cutler will be joining our women’s golf program,” Kuhle said. “Nicki had a wonderful junior, college and professional career and has now been coaching for seven years. She has great experience at the professional and collegiate levels, at top ranked academic and athletic institutions, with Vanderbilt and Princeton. I know she will bring some great ideas to our team, is a hard worker and has tremendous passion for mentoring student-athletes, golf and the city of Denver. I couldn’t be happier to have Nicki onboard and back in Colorado to work with the Pioneers.”

Cutler was a standout junior golfer in the state of Colorado, while playing at Kent Denver and Cherry Creek High School. Kuhle and Cutler competed against eachother in junior and college golf tournaments, playing at Tulane and Vanderbilt, respectively.

UNO's Bough to Represent USVI at CBC Championships

UNO women's basketball senior guard Lanese Bough will represent her homeland, the US

Virgin Islands, this week at the FIBA Caribbean Basketball Championships in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. 

Bough and the US Virgin Islands begin the preliminary round at the tournament on Tuesday, July 8 against Bahamas at 1:15 p.m. (Central). The Virgin Islands are paired with Barbados, Dominican Republic and Bahamas in Group A. Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines make up Group B. 

Virgin Islands will play Barbados on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. (Central) and Dominican Republic on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. (Central) before the playoff round begins on Friday and ends Saturday.

WIU's Ashley Luke Featured In SLAM Magazine

Western Illinois women's basketball forward Ashley Luke is highlighted in the most recent issue of SLAM magazine where she is touted for her athletic and academic performances in the "Hype" section of the Special Collectors Edition.

In the "Picture Me Ballin'" feature on page 20, author Alex Schulz states that the junior is "a force to be reckoned with," and further describes Luke as "impressive" and "elite".  

"It is great to see Ashley and our team get some ink in a magazine like SLAM," said head coach JD Gravina. "You don't normally see a mid-major women's basketball player get much publicity."
