Denver senior Michelle Garpenlov writes about her experience at the 2015 Summit League Women's Tennis Championship:

4/23/15

We left campus at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning to go to Indiana for our league tournament. We had a two-hour flight and road trip a head of us and we all were tired but excited about what this weekend was going to offer. We arrived about twenty minutes before our conference banquet was going to start and we rushed to get ready for it. Prizes were handed out five girls on our team made the all-league team and we won the regular season title after going undefeated through all of our matches. I (Michelle) had the honor to go up and receive our prize and it was an amazing feeling that we had won it again second year in a row. After the banquet we had tennis practice from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. After a long day of traveling we all thought that this was going to be a long and tough practice but it turned out to be one of the better ones we have had this whole year and it was so fun to see the team all fired up for the weekend. After that it was bedtime.

4/24/15

We got to sleep a little bit today, which means we woke up at around 8:30 a.m. and had breakfast. This day was all about practice and getting ready for tomorrows semifinal. We had practice from 10:30 a.m. till 12:00. After this we went to lunch and then we had practice for a second time from 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. The first practice we did a lot of doubles drills and match play and the second practice was more about singles. It was amazing to see how focused we were during these practices because we knew that even though we had won against all of the teams earlier in the year we wanted to be as prepared as possible for this weekend. The two goals that we set for this weekend and ourselves were effort and positivity. These were the two things that our coaches wanted us to think about when playing these other teams. After this we showered and went to dinner with University of Denver Men’s Tennis. It was fun to be able to hang out and talk to the guys because we are both going into the tournament with a target on our back, being the team that is predicted to win conference. It is never easy being the favorite to win and many people have high expectations on you so the dinner worked as a little break from thinking about conference. After dinner most of us went to our rooms and either did some homework or watched TV before going to bed.

4/25/15

Today is the day we play league semifinals. We all woke up and had breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Since the weather was really bad and it was raining, the matches were moved indoors. Our match was scheduled at 2:00 p.m. After breakfast most of us went back to bed and got another hour and half of sleep before getting ready to leave for lunch. Once we had lunch we went straight to the courts where we were going to play our match. This is where we had hit on Thursday night so we all knew how the courts are, which is always a comfortable feeling. We warmed up and hit for an hour before our match and there was a lot of positive energy coming from everyone on the team. We were all pumped up, excited and ready to go for our match. We started with doubles and all of us played very well. We clinched our matches at number one and two doubles so they got done first. After we realized we won the doubles point we all gathered around to get mentally prepared for the singles matches that were a head of us. We all felt good and everyone who was playing singles did their own thing for about five minutes to prepare themselves. We got good leads on all courts and Evy [Van Genechten] was the one who clinched the win 4-0. It was great feeling but also a relief to have completed our first match and knowing that we are in the final. We worked hard and had positive attitudes throughout the whole day, which lead to success. We want to give credit to South Dakota for competing hard that day. After this we had dinner and as the day before we all went to our rooms and did whatever we had to do to prepare for the next day.

4/26/15

The league final has finally come and the day started with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. As the day before our match time was at 2 p.m. or as soon as the boys finished up their match. After breakfast we went back to our rooms, dressed into our match outfits and packed our bags. We left the hotel at 11 a.m. to get lunch and go watch the men’s conference final. This time the weather was better and we were able to play outside. It was fun seeing the guys play and they did really well. Once they had won the conference title we got on the courts and warmed up for our match. We warmed up and went through our normal routine before matches. The energy was on top and we were all excited about the match and challenge that was a head of us. Doubles started at 1:30 p.m. and as yesterday we played very good doubles. Charlotte [Derbyshire] and I clinched the doubles point and gave the team a 1-0 lead. We all gathered around for another pep talk before heading out for singles. Looking up at the scoreboard we were up on all courts in the first set by a lot. Our team was playing very well today and probably the best we had played against a conference team all year. It was very exciting and fun to watch. Everyone was doing the two goals we set for ourselves before the weekend, positive and effort. This time Charlotte was the won who got to clinch the match with a 6-3 6-1 victory. We all ran into a group hug and it was a great feeling. Knowing that all of the hours on and off the court, the traveling and the matches we had played had prepared us for this moment. It is so worth it! South Dakota State played very well against us and it was a battle until the end. We achieved two goals in one day that we set for ourselves this year and that was to win conference and make it to NCAA and we did it. There is no way to describe the feeling of accomplishing something that you have been working for all year but we are going dancing. For some people this is their first conference victory and for others this will be their last but for all of us this is a memory that we will cherish and remember the rest of our lives.

My Championship Experience -- 2015 Women's Basketball Edition

My Championship Experience is a diary blog written by Summit League student-athletes detailing their experiences at each of the 19 Championships.
_______________________________

Western Illinois senior Tori Niemann writes about her experience at the 2015 Summit League Women's Basketball Championship:

What an atmosphere! The Summit League doesn’t get enough credit. Playing in the new Danny Sanford PREMIER Center was incredible. As a senior, it was really special to end my career in such a great basketball environment. The competition between all the teams this year made the season a lot of fun. There were no guaranteed wins or losses for any team and that carried over into the tournament. I’m going to miss playing, but I will also miss playing in The Summit League.

A little about our game day…

We played on Sunday, which was Daylight Savings and that was pretty rough! It’s always hard
to wake up when it’s still dark out. We had shoot around at 7:30 a.m. (which was actually 6:30 a.m.) and then went back to the hotel. Don’t worry, we napped. When we came down the elevator to leave for the game, all of our parents were waiting to send us off and wish us luck. Our parents and fans are awesome and have been so supportive over the years. Obviously, we’re a little further from Sioux Falls than SDSU or USD, so it was really neat to see so many purple shirts and familiar faces in the stands cheering us on.

We lost in the first round, which was really tough, but I read something the other day about what makes athletes special- and that’s the ability to fail more times than we succeed, but we always get back up and find a way to win. I’m so proud of my team and proud to be a Leatherneck! Oorah!

Denver Rated No. 1 School to Play Women’s Soccer by USA TODAY

In a recent poll released by the USA TODAY, the University of Denver was rated as the top institution in the country to play women's college soccer. "The ranking of women's soccer teams is based on the athletic success of the team, the overall quality of the school and the academic success of the players," the USA TODAY stated in its release. Read more about the methodology of selections here.

"Our four year graduation rate has been through the roof and we have had a lot of success on the field, but more importantly, we've had some awesome young women and their families come through this program to make it what it is today," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "Our state of the art facilities along with administrative support have made this a great place for me to coach and teach these young adults."

Hooker will enter into his 24th campaign with the DU women's soccer program this fall, and boasts a 315-114-40 women's record, and a 335-126-44 record overall at the University (coached both the men's and women's team for two seasons). In his tenure, Hooker is a nine-time conference coach of the year, and has led the Pioneers to seven regular season and eight league tournament titles, while also making nine NCAA Division I Tournament appearances.

HICKEY AND HOWARD SET FOR USA NATIONAL TEAM OPEN TRYOUT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Two IUPUI volleyball players who have been instrumental in helping the Jaguars claim three consecutive Summit League regular-season titles will get the opportunity to head to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts.

Senior Beth Howard and junior Kaitlyn Hickey are two of 232 athletes from 90 universities participating in the tryouts Feb. 20-22 for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team, U.S. Collegiate National Teams program and U.S. Junior National Team.

Hickey is a three-time All-Summit League selection, and this past season she became the second player in program history to earn AVCA All-Region honors. That led to her becoming the first player in IUPUI history to be named an All-American after she was tabbed an AVCA Honorable-Mention All-American.

"For Beth and I to have this opportunity to represent IUPUI shows the strength of our program right now," Hickey said. "This weekend, my main goal is to improve as an individual and learn from these high profile Division-I athletes and Olympic coaches so that I can come back as a better player and compete for a fourthstraight conference championship next year."

Howard completed her four-year career this past fall and ranks third in school history in career digs. The two-time All-Summit League performer was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and a senior, marking just the second time in league history that a player has won the award in consecutive years.

"This opportunity means a lot to me," Howard said. "I get the chance to prove myself against some of the best players from all across the country. I hope to gain more experience and exposure."

The tryouts begin at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 20, and live streaming of the tryouts can be accessed here.

"This is a great opportunity for Kaitlyn and Beth to show what they can do on the court against some of the best competition," head coach Steve Payne said. "They are two great players who have done a lot for our program. We see what they can do on a daily basis, and now it will be great for others around the country to see what they are capable of."

Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer Karch Kiraly and the U.S. Women's National Team staff will lead the tryout process. Selected athletes will be notified by early March and USA Volleyball will announce the selections by the end of March once all roster spots are confirmed.

IPFW's Spencer Set to Try out for USA National Team

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Emily Spencer, IPFW’s two-time Summit League Volleyball Player of the Year, will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado Feb. 20-22 for the U.S. Women's National Team tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Spencer ended here four-year career with the Mastodons as an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American, an AVCA North All-Region First Team selection, and the Summit League Player of the Year.

A Jenison, Michigan native, Spencer was the sixth player in Summit League history to earn multiple Player of the Year honors in her career after earning the award as a sophomore in 2012. In her final campaign with the team, Spencer tied for a league-high with two Offensive Player of the Week honors and finished her career with a school-record 54-match streak with double-digit kills. She became the second player in IPFW and Summit League history to record 2,000 career kills. Spencer is also one of eight Mastodons players with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for their career.

The tryout will evaluate approximately 238 athletes from 93 colleges from across the country for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team, the U.S. Collegiate National Team program and for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team for athletes born in 1996 or 1997.

U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly and his staff will direct the entire tryout process, which can be viewed with an online video stream. The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT with Queen of the Court competitions, while Saturday's sessions are at 8 a.m. (focus on serve/receive and individual work) and 2 p.m. (middle-centered and out-of-system focus). The tryout concludes on Sunday at 8 a.m. with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the staff to participate in a "USA" training session.
